"Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat."

– Theodore Roosevelt

Welcome. My name is John Fishburne, and I hope that the information found
on this website provides some resources that can help you live vibrantly and

I was fortunate to be raised in the small, mountain town of Leavenworth, WA
where we enjoyed skiing, climbing, cycling, and backpacking. After
graduating from EWU, my family moved to Fayetteville, AR for five years
while I completed my doctoral training at the University of Arkansas. We then
lived in Portland, OR where I finished my graduate internship at the VA
Hospital. While my family enjoyed each of these unique parts of our country,
we are blessed to be back in Washington State.

Expert Care for Diverse Psychological Needs

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is among the most researched and empirically supported forms of therapy that focuses on identifying and changing problematic patterns of thinking and behaving to improve emotional regulation and develop personal coping strategies.  It has been extensively studied across a wide range of mental health conditions, making it a preferred treatment method for various psychological issues.

Compared to CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (A.C.T.) acknowledges that there are many situations in life that are difficult or painful even if we are thinking correctly that still require us to move forward if we are to achieve our goals.  ACT uses mindfulness techniques to teach us to identify and accept these “difficult” thoughts and feelings so that they have less control, while elevating the motivational power found in our deeply held values (e.g., loyalty, compassion, trust).

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a counseling approach designed to enhance an individual’s motivation for change by helping them resolve their ambivalence (or feeling “stuck”).  MI does not presume to know what is best for you.  Rather it helps the client decide what is best for them based on their values, priorities, and long-term goals, and then helps motivate the client to take action – even if it is difficult.

Mindfulness encourages clients to observe their thoughts and feelings from a distance without immediately categorizing them as good or bad, which helps in reducing the tendency to make preconceived judgments and assumptions. This practice can lead to a more balanced emotional state, as individuals learn to respond to situations with greater clarity and less reactivity.

Differentiation in relationships describes a dynamic and ongoing process of maintaining one’s own identity and perspectives while still being emotionally engaged with a partner, allowing for a healthy management of conflicts and differences without compromising individual integrity or the bond. This balance between togetherness and individuality is crucial for sustaining emotional connection, mutual respect, and intimacy, enabling both partners to grow personally without drifting apart.
